I found this list while perusing the cosplay tag and someone else was infuriated by it. They covered crossplaying in their post but I’m going to cover EVERYTHING that pissed me off.
I started reading this list and was like “okay whatever. Everyone has different ideas about cosplay.” I personally cosplay but don’t get into character BECAUSE I CAN’T ACT. There is no law saying a cosplayer has to role-play in their outfit. I try as best I can but it doesn’t always work out or the character IS TOO INAPPROPRIATE to act like in PUBLIC. As I read the next item on the list I stopped. Okay she mentioned weight and hieght, but what was that? Bigger girls can’t wear sailor fukus? I don’t think she understands that you can make patterns to fit your body type. That is a thing. Again, whatever she clearly doesn’t know.
I keep reading.
Okay, I agree with number 3 and 4. That’s a first… Then number 5… wait… you just said the same thing (in a nicer way) in number 1. I’m confused. Oh no you did not just tell people to not cosplay at all if they can’t get into character. Oh heck no! That is so rude. So what only actors can cosplay? What is that? [rages at screen]
Lets see what she has to say on number 6.. Know thy props. Okay I can dig that. I love seeing cosplayers with props and ones that make sense for the chara- Wait… I don’t know about you, but I have seen some fun cardboard props. Not everyone is rich. I mean come on. I sure as heck am not going to judge a cosplayer if they didn’t make a 100% accurate prop! That’s just stupid.
Now I have a headache… What does she say in 7? Okay, I admit. I fail at that. I always procrastinate so I am the night before con (and sometimes at con) finishing a cosplay. Hey it happens! Number 8? Yes people should know the fandom, but you are now telling them that if more than one person is cosplaying a character they shouldn’t. What? That’s rude. People should cosplay whoever they want! I personally like seeing the different people cosplaying a character to see what they do with it. Rude much.
Now I hit 9. Know thy Gender. (is this a bible theme we are going with all of the thy’s I’m confused) Now here I have to say, this is complete bullshit. Not every girl has a feminine face and not every guy has a masculine one. Most of my friends crossplay and they look fantastic! So what if a girl wants to cosplay as a male character? If they follow through with it PROPERLY it will look great! (I say properly in the sense of please be careful when binding D: don’t hurt yourselves!) I have met some guys who made fantastic women! Just because you clearly have some gender issue doesn’t mean you should tell people not to cosplay as a character of a certain gender. I bet you don’t like cosplayers who do gender swaps either.
10 and 11 now… I am not looking forward to this…Okay yes I agree, to an extent. The makeup rule. Just touch it up every once in a while though. You don’t have to go and get something you can’ afford or you are allergic to, etc. But just remember that it can make you ‘shiny’ if it isn’t matte. Pictures. Please DO NOT BE RUDE TO PEOPLE TAKING YOUR PICTURES. I don’t know how many times I’ve asked someone for a picture and they bitchingly told me no. I was told by a Horo that I couldn’t take a picture of her unless I knew what character she was. I WAS EXCITED TO SEE A HORO AND THAT WAS WHAT I WAS GREATED WITH. So please guys… Be nice to people who want to take your pictures.
Now I will go to digest the excerpts. There was a longer rant under these so called “rules”. I did NOT alter them in any way other than crop them and I took full paragraphs not sentences.
The first one. Oh goodness. She ended her “rules” with saying she is snobby and elitist. Really? That is a thing people do? Ugh… She then talks about how she won’t tell a cosplayer that she dislikes their cosplay to their face, but what is that? A first hand experience she’s had with not telling someone their cosplay ‘sucks’. Uhm Sweetie. You kind of did. That girl wanted to be your friend but you were too much of a jerk to talk to her properly. Sorry, but you hid behind ‘being in character’ to insult her, then you have to “break character” to tell her you don’t want her with you because she will make YOU look bad. Oh Hunny you already make yourself look bad.
Second excerpt what about you can she redeem herself? Oh, no… She can’t. So she’s sick of all of that? Then don’t tell those people who treat these girls like that that it is okay to be rude and cruel because according to you these girls are just “normal looking and fat”. Sorry not everyone can be thin. It doesn’t work that way. IT HAS NEVER WORKED THAT WAY. Someone apparently didn’t love you when you were young. If they had you wouldn’t be so against having friends who want to keep you happy. Is that really so wrong? I hope your friends tell you that you look ugly all the time. (I’m not saying she is, I haven’t gone to look at a picture of her other than the little one on her author bio that was on the bottom of the post)
The next excerpt is even worse. I am ready to hit this girl right now. So, basically I am cosplaying for attention? Apparently I will publicly self harm just to get attention? First off you have the wrong concept of how self harm works that I don’t even want to get into. Secondly, Personally I cosplay for fun. I never am upset or disappointed if I don’t get pictures. I’m self conscious about my sewing so I never think it is any good. How dare you call someones friends “sychopathic” (it’s spelled with a p just so you know. If you need to insult try using spell check.) How incredibly rude! And especially for the ‘reason’ you say they are psychopathic? Are you kidding me? Don’t. Just don’t I can’t even explain the amount of wrong you are!
The last excerpt is how she ends her ‘rules’, rant, i don’t know what to call this anymore… No thank you. I won’t be following this awful spew of words. Apparently, you think it’s okay to talk about others who want to have fun this way, but I whole heartily disagree. It’s awful how you think anyone below professional status should just sit on the sidelines and watch the pretty people. What next? If you don’t look exactly like the character you shouldn’t cosplay them either? You may have already covered that notion.
